You Know Best- An Open Letter to My Daughter- From My Teacher-Mama Heart

12/1/16 (This was written on 12/1/16. My daughter was much younger then, but the ideas still remain.) My dear, sweet girl, You Know Best You, my sweet girl, know best. You know better than anyone how hard I work for my “kiddos”. You know because you see it. No, you don’t go to school with me every day. You go to your own school. And, no, you don’t know my “kiddos” at all. You know because you see me. You see me for who I am. You, my sweet girl, give up many hours of play to see me working tirelessly on my computer. You see me always striving for better for my kids. You hear me asking for ideas and looking for fun activities that also engage their brains in the standards I’ve been given to teach. You, my sweet girl, know best. You know better than anyone how much I love my “kiddos”. You see me cry tears of joy when they succeed at something, especially when they succeed at something they’ve been really struggling with. You see me cry tears of pain because my

Homework in the Hot Seat?

Homework is so debated. So passionately debated. If you're not a teacher, then I doubt you'd believe the amount of passion that goes into discussions on homework. Is it best practice? Does it make a difference? Do kids really need to do homework? Is it just busy work? Do I have to assign it? Why do I have to assign it? Do we all have to do the same thing? You name it, and it's been discussed. There are many views. Many teachers believe that homework makes a positive difference in the education of a child. And, you know what? Just as many disagree. Many teachers believe that sending home a reading log is crucial to reading homework. And... I bet you can guess it... just as many completely, wholeheartedly, disagree. Many teachers think that sending home pages upon pages of math problems each night is the ticket to knowing how to do math. And, there are so many teachers who will stomp their feet and yell, "absolutely not!" You see, teachers are pas

Reply-All?

Can I get an "Amen?!" Teachers, you do NOT need to "Reply All" unless everyone (and I do mean everyone) on that list needs to know what you are typing.  And that's all. That. Is. all.

The Worst 4 Letter Word

We are excited to share this blog post with you. It is written by our dear friend and teammate, Mrs. Bethany Olden.  Four letter words. You know the ones I’m talking about. When students speak them they make you hold your breath afraid of what’s to follow. (Or, let’s be honest, the ones that we often let zing through our minds at a frustrating moment hoping to high heaven that we didn’t just say that out loud!) Most of us have one in particular that we consider the “worst” one. The one that if a person you loved flung it in your direction the wound left by its razored edges would be deep. I’ll tell you mine, but before I do, you’d better get ready. Are you sitting down? Are the kids out of the room? I’ll give you a second to check. Wait for it … .. Wait...no, seriously, that’s it. W. A. I. T. Isn’t it just awful?! I have often talked with my coworkers about how this technology infused world has decreased our ability to wait patiently. Students want to just “know ho

This is one of my favorite quotes about teaching.

We Love TED Talks!

Of course, most teachers love TED Talks. We are no different! We love TED Talks! We have a few favorites we thought we'd share with you.  This is one of our favorites! We love that she hits the nail on the head. We truly believe in the power of having genuine relationships with our students. We know that kids learn best from people they like. Man, so so true! Even now we learn best from others that we like and respect. Y'all, bottom line is- she's right. Every kid needs a champion!  https://www.ted.com/talks/rita_pierson_every_kid_needs_a_champion We also love this one... because we have great hope for the public school systems of the United States. Also, his accent is fabulous! ;) https://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_how_to_escape_education_s_death_valley Of course, if you'll excuse the poor language, this one is so perfect! Teachers make a DIFFERENCE. https://www.ted.com/talks/taylor_ma
