Homework in the Hot Seat?

Homework is so debated. So passionately debated. If you're not a teacher, then I doubt you'd believe the amount of passion that goes into discussions on homework.

Is it best practice? Does it make a difference? Do kids really need to do homework? Is it just busy work? Do I have to assign it? Why do I have to assign it? Do we all have to do the same thing?

You name it, and it's been discussed.

There are many views. Many teachers believe that homework makes a positive difference in the education of a child. And, you know what? Just as many disagree.

Many teachers believe that sending home a reading log is crucial to reading homework. And... I bet you can guess it... just as many completely, wholeheartedly, disagree.

Many teachers think that sending home pages upon pages of math problems each night is the ticket to knowing how to do math. And, there are so many teachers who will stomp their feet and yell, "absolutely not!"

You see, teachers are passionate people. They are people who want what is best for children. They are people who are forced to do many things throughout the day that they KNOW are not best for children. But, have no fear, they don't ever go down without a fight.

I'm one of those people. I am a teacher. I am a passionate teacher. I am a teacher who does what's best for my kids. I am a teacher who does not go down without a fight.

I believe that children should have time to be children. I do my best not to take work home with me so that I can enjoy time with my family. I think it's important that kids have the opportunity to do the same. However, I am not completely against homework.

I think that reading each night is important to the growth of a student. There are many statistics that prove this is the case. (See images I borrowed below.) But, there are so many people who just fill out the reading log, making the reading log pointless.

This one really speaks to me. People skip reading homework all the time... and it breaks my heart.

What about you? Do you have an opinion on homework?

Who Has Time for Lunch?

Teacher lunch ideas- quick, cheap, healthy We can't possibly be the only teachers in America who laugh when people mention eating lunch during the week. Maybe it's more envy than laughter. Who knows. What I do know is that it's a joke among teachers that we can eat full meals while walking around the cafeteria opening Ketchup packets, telling kids to use their manners, and we don't even get sick when we see milk come out of someone's nose. Now, that's talent! We make wishes about eating with other adults or having a moment of peace during the day, but the honest truth there isn't anywhere we'd rather be. Lunch is a time to get to know our kids. We get to have conversations with them, find out about the latest craze to hit elementary school, and die laughing at some of their antics. But, where does this leave teachers at the end of the day? STARVING! Running to the vending machine and scarfing down anything that comes out of that machine like a Hoov...

Brag Tags... What??

I'm all about some Brag Tags. Seriously. I love them. If you haven't ever heard of Brag Tags, you're missing out- fo reals yo!   I spent a large portion of my summer printing, laminating, and cutting out brag tags. (See photo on left.) I also had a great display for the brag tags (unfortunately you can only see it in the photo on the right if you turn your head all the way around and squint and blink 156 times).  So, what do you do with those things? Is it worth it? Does it really make a difference? Don't the kids think they're dumb? That seems like a lot of work.  Those are all things I've heard over and over. So, let's ponder those things, shall we?  What do I do with them?  I give them to kids. Duh! But seriously, I started out the year wearing them on my lanyard and randomly handing them out when appropriate. Eventually I got irritated with the fact that my lanyard was always picking my clothes (and if you...
